How do you actually pick an IMP manufacturer?
Answer seven questions in order: (1) FM 4880 required? (2) What's the driving thermal target? (3) Regional plant availability? (4) Lead time constraint? (5) Custom color or specialty finish? Is FM 4880 Class 1 required?
Cold storage insurer spec (nearly always), data center envelope (nearly always), and increasingly cannabis flower rooms all require FM 4880 Class 1. Only mineral wool and specific PIR formulations qualify. EPS and standard polyiso do not. This single constraint eliminates 40-50% of panels.
What's the driving thermal target?
Cold storage freezer walls at R-30+ push toward 4-inch PIR (R-30) or 5-inch mineral wool (R-25). Data center envelopes at R-25 are more flexible. Cooler-only cold storage at R-20 opens more options. Match panel thickness and core to the actual thermal spec, not to future-proofing.
Which manufacturers have plants near your site?

What's the lead time window?
Standard panels 10-16 weeks in Q3 2026. Custom colors or specialty finishes 14-24 weeks. If your project needs panels in 8 weeks, options narrow to whoever has stock or partial production. Ordering at 55-60% CDs protects the install schedule regardless of manufacturer.
Do you need custom colors or specialty finishes?
Standard mill finish (white, tan, gray) is fastest and cheapest. Custom colors add $2-$4 per SF and 4-8 weeks. Specialty finishes (PVDF paint, wood-grain print, embossed textures) add $4-$8 per SF and 6-12 weeks. Kingspan, CENTRIA, and Metl-Span all offer full color programs. AWIP and PermaTherm more limited.
